This dashboard presents information about criminal cases initiated through an arraignment hearing in the Bronx courts since 2019. All cases that have been arraigned in either Criminal or Superior Court are included in the analysis in this dashboard. These trends can be disaggregated by Charge Severity and Charge Type.
During the initial criminal court arraignment, sometimes referred to as first appearance, the defendant is informed of the charges being filed against them and the defendant is given the opportunity to plead guilty or not guilty. If the arrestee is in custody at the time of arrest, the arraignment hearing must be held within 24 hours. If the arrestee is issued a desk appearance ticket by NYPD, they are provided with a date to appear for an arraignment hearing, typically within 20 days of the arrest.
Some felony cases are initiated through a Bronx DA investigation and Supreme Court indictment, not through an NYPD patrol arrest. Initial arraignment for these cases occurs in the Supreme Court. These cases are included in the analysis in this dashboard.
Data Notes:
- The unit of analysis for this dashboard is an arraigned case, defined by the unique combination of defendant and docket number. For example, if a docket number included two co-defendants, each co-defendant would be treated as a unique case.
- An individual person may have more than one case counted in the analysis if they were arraigned multiple times on different cases since 2019.
- The number of arraigned cases in a given timeframe is not equal to the number of arrests referred to the BXDA because some arrests are initiated through a Bronx DA investigation, declined for prosecution, transferred to another court prior to arraignment or the defendant does not appear for arraignment and is issued a bench warrant.
- Prosecutors have discretion to upgrade or downgrade arrest charges when screening cases, so the charge(s) at arraignment may not match those at arrest.
- Data Source: Criminal case and court measures are based on data from the Office of Court Administration transmitted to the Bronx DA.
